Waiting for My Car

6x18", across the two page spread of a Stillman & Birn prototype hardbound Beta sketchbook

I got a flat tire on my way home from delivering paintings to a show a couple of weeks ago! I was driving around looking for a good sketching location when I heard a strange noise and pulled over to the side of the road. Fortunately, at that point I was only five minutes from my husband's office, and what a guy! He came over and changed the tire for me.

The next morning I took my car to the repair shop for a new tire and an oil change. They were so fast that I didn't even have time to finish my sketch. I didn't realize at the time that the bright red car on the left belonged to the guy who did the work on my car. He was happy to see it immortalized in my sketchbook! I told them if they had taken longer, I would have been able to finish my sketch. They replied that if they hadn't been so slow, I'd not have had time to sketch!

  1. You should have asked for a discount for sketching his car, Jamie. LOL Having a flat tire is a pain in the neck, especially when you're alone. BTW, what part was flattened? Front tires tend to wear out quicker than rear tires, so I would advise you to have them rotated regularly to prevent flat.

  2. The sketch is still beautiful, Jamie! Remember, flat tires are inevitable, though, they even run even in extended low pressure episodes. Hehe. Just a tip: Check for possible flaws regularly, (once a month) that may affect your car’s performance. Act on them immediately to avoid being hassled by car problems in the middle of the road.

  3. Wow, you’ve got a really nice and caring hubby! Though his office was near, it’s still impressive that he took the time to go out and change the tire for you. And the repair shop was pretty awesome too! Aside from providing comprehensive auto repair services, they’re fast and effective as well. It’s great you found a really reliable auto repair shop.

    1. I just think all hubbies are expected to be like that, hehe! Besides, they should be the one to do all the car repair and all other stuff you know... Prolly spend for you as well! Haha!

    2. I'm sorry about the flat tire. I understand your reply to Patrick, Leigh. She has a point, Patrick! :P You should have told the repairmen to take it slowly so you can actually finish your sketch. Haha!

  4. Awww! How sweet of your husband to do that for you, Jamie!=) Changing tires is expected to be a guy’s work. However, it’s a great advantage for a woman like you and me to know at least some basic skills in changing tires. Right, Jamie? That way, we get back on the road in no time, especially if we’re travelling alone. Anyway, you have exceptional sketching skills!

  5. Your hands are for sketching and not for car repairs! Haha! Anyway, let the mechanics do the fixing for you and save your hands for art. Next time, check your car first before leaving home. Of course you wouldn’t want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere, right? Make it a habit to check your car first before taking it out on the road.

  6. That’s a fantastic hobby and skill to have! :) You can clearly sketch and practice your art anywhere and anytime! Also, the red car really did stand out in your painting. Kudos!
