Sketching at the Jefferson Valley Mall
I went to the Jefferson Valley Mall with a group of artist friends, where we were nearly evicted by a security guard for sketching! These were done on pages I'd prepared in the S&B Alpha sketchbook that I've been reviewing.
wow, that's some crazy security measures! I got a chuckle out of this post for sure, especially over the sketch titled, "The Store That Shall Remain Nameless". So funny. At least you have a good sense of humor. I have to admit, I'm desperately trying to figure out which store it is...
Maybe some kind of 'brochure' would help, or a card. People like things to look 'official'. I know when I'm out taking photos, if I give people my card they are much more likely to let me take a photo than if they think I'm just some random stalker. This is especially true at places where kids roam around, like malls. Everyone is so protective of copyrights and kids these days that artists can't assume we'll be welcomed any more.
I've sketched at the mall and nobody has tried to evict me. lol You must have looked dangerous with your sketchbook and waterbrush. You can never tell what you might have in that. Great sketches.
Do people ever disturb you when you're sketching outside or at malls? I gave up some years ago because people would annoy me by looking over my shoulder and making comments. But at the same time, I'd like to sketch at the museums!
If people annoy you when you're sketching, how do you deal with it?
Kp, sometimes ya just gotta laugh it off! It's too ridiculous to take seriously.
Mary, one of our members had actually called in advance and gotten permission! I guess whoever gave that permission is going to have to answer for it. LOL And by the way, you're not even allowed to take photos there. The security guard said, "You should see what I have to deal with when groups of friends meet up at the mall and want to take photos together, using their cellphone cameras!" What a stupid thing to have to police that kind of stuff.
Joan, yeah, waterbrushes are dangerous stuff! Reminds me of the time security pulled my luggage apart three times when Xray revealed dangerous-looking objects, which turned out to be my Escoda sable travel brushes! :)))
Amina, I'm used to having people around when I paint, since I am nearly always working out on location. I think the security folks and management bother me more than the passers-by at this point!
Oh, and I should add....This mall was almost empty, and clearly they're not doing well, with most of the food court having already closed. You'd think they'd be happy to have eight of us walk in their doors who might even all make purchases, but they don't exactly make it a warm and friendly place to visit.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a "fall-out" from the plein air artist's painting of a bank with flames added - sold with a pretty high bid.
